    Applications of Fuzzy Logic on the Internet

    Internet has become a necessity in our current society. It is today an essential component for people’s everyday life, but also from the point of view of economy and, of course, technology. Internet opens a whole world of new possibilities and ideas, that are furthermore accessible to everyone. Unfortunately, the vast amount of available information requires a continuous development of new formalisms, languages, protocols and technologies that fight the natural entropy of the system. In this R+D project, we think that the development of technologies for the future Internet should be based on rigorous and accurate methods that will allow us to predict or formally prove properties of a given system, reducing the number of errors, and allowing the system to recover from them automatically in real time. For this purpose, we think that the use of rigorous or formal techniques is essential to guarantee their quality.
    The main goal of the R+D project MERINET is thus to contribute to the advance of the research in rigorous techniques to improve the reliability and usefulness of software in general, and the applications for Internet in particular. The project will pursue the improvement of the future Internet, also contributing to increment the competitiveness of the Spanish software industry and the opportunities for technology transfer between the universities and the Spanish software development companies, so that they can face the current challenges.
    Therefore, in this project we plan to develop new rigorous methods and techniques that contribute to the future Internet at different levels:
    – Information extraction. This is an essential task today, given the vast amount of information available in the network. In this project, we aim at developing new techniques for information extraction, and we will also use fuzzy technology to improve their expressiveness.
    – Validation and debugging. The applications developed for Internet are more and more complex every day: they are usually multi-paradigm, with a high degree of concurrency, and they require a good level of fault-tolerance. In this context, we propose the use of rigorous methods to define new analysis and debugging techniques for Java and Erlang applications, two of the most popular languages in this context.

  • FIDELIO: Fuzzy Information Filtering Techniques applied to Metasearch Engines

    Applications of Fuzzy Logic on the Internet

    The main objective of this project is the application of the fuzzy information filtering techniques on metasearch engines in order to retrieve more relevant results for the user, specially in within enviroments where the underlying contents change dynamically. An example of this kind of applications are the Web, blogs, e-mail, etc.

    For this purpose a review of the main techniques and strategies that have used up to now is planned. Among these strategies clustering, information filtering based on user profiles, knowledge represtation based on prototypes, automatic ontology generation or pseudo/relevance feedback can be some examples.

    Once the review has been made, a platform will be developed whose main goal is the implementation of the main methods used to organize dynamic document collections in an automatic way by means of fuzzy content-based structures. The evaluation of the system performance will be tested by the application of the built structures to the search process carried out by metasearch engines.

    Once the application is developed and the methods are tested then the last step will be the technology transfer in order to transmit the adquired knowledge to the society.

  • PLINIO: Observatory on the Effects of Climate Change based on the intelligent extraction of information from the Internet

    There is a huge volume of information on Internet about the climate change impacts. This information is constantly generated from different information sources such as institutions (WHO, FAO), newspapers, ONGs, etc. and it is very useful in order to have an updated knowledge about the subject, but it cannot be profited because of their large volume and dispersion in the sources. This project intends to solve this problem by using Semantic Web methods and technologies as ontologies, meta-search engines and intelligent agents in order to locate, analyze, filter and categorize information on climate change impacts from Internet. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to provide organized and meaningful information about the subject that has appeared on the Web, which can become an important strategic advantage for making short, medium and long term on the subjecty.

  • SCAIWEB1 & SCAIWEB2: Retrieval, Organization and Management of Information on the Web using Soft Computing techniques

    Soft Computing applied to the Web

    The aim of this project is the develpment of the SCAIWEB platform for searching on Internet towards the efficient management and organization of the dynamic Web repositories of documents (web pages, blogs, e-mail). Using several soft computing techniques, based mainly in fuzzy logic, it is necessary to develop several methods to organize automatically web document collections at a fuzzy hierarchical structure based on the document contents. Another important objective is to provide a Technology Transference process, for making possible the use of these kinds of systems in real conditions such as the SCAIWEB project.
    To accomplish this goal, in this project the tasks of reviewing existing techniques and State of Art, developing of new soft computing based complements for the SCAIWEB platform (clustering algorithms, pseudorelevance feedback, advanced visualization techniques, etc.) in order to achieve a new platform to solve the problems of organization and management information on the Web, are proposed.

  • F-META: Soft-Computing Techniques for Fuzzy Meta Search Engines Development

    The aim of this Project is to develop, to implement and to test (proofs) a prototype of the F-Meta Fuzzy Meta search engine, with an agent-based structure that allows to test in an autonomic way but in a global environment different soft computing based techniques. The goal would improve Web access and Web search.
    The final objective is to favour a Technology Transference process, for making possible the use of these kinds of systems in real conditions. To accomplish this goal, in this project the tasks of reviewing existing techniques and State of Art, developing of new soft computing based mechanisms for information access on the Web, developing an agent-based metasearch engine, developing and programming the F-Meta Fuzzy meta search engine and testing the prototype, will be accomplished.
