Academic profile
(Leganés, Madrid, 1980) – I have been a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Communication of the University of Castilla-La Mancha since 2012. I currently teach Political Communication and Audiovisual Narrative here at UCLM. Previously, I have taught other subjects such as Media System Structure, Economic Journalism, Multimedia Journalism and Semiotics of Mass Communication, in universities such as the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the National University of Distance Education (UNED), the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), the University of Bologna (Italy) and Harvard University (Cambridge, USA), where I worked as a Fellow Researcher (2012-2013). I also have lectured at other universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Greece, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Portugal and Italy.
‘International Ph.D cum laude’ in Communication (UCM, 2015, FPI and FPU scholarships). My doctoral thesis analyzes the coverage of the economic crisis in the Spanish press, applying quantitative (lexicometrics) and qualitative (narrative semiotics) methodologies. Master in Scientific Communication and Dissemination at UNED (2011), Bachelor of Audiovisual Communication at Carlos III University of Madrid (2007) and Technical Engineer in Computer Systems from Complutense University of Madrid (2004).
Professional profile (as a journalist)
As a journalist, I have directed and presented the tv program CienciAfición on TeleUNED, and coordinated the scientific dissemination platform DivulgaUNED, in which I was responsible for the production of documentaries. Member of the first Editorial Council of Contexto y Acción magazine (Ctxt.es), founding cooperative member of La Marea newspaper, and creator and editor of El Observador de Castilla-La Mancha (2012-2016). I have written about communication and politics for Spanish newspapers like El Confidencial, Público, Huffington Post, Diagonal (now El Salto) and eldiario.es among others, and I maintain an opinion column at infoLibre.
I have previously worked as a high school teacher and political consultant-analyst.
Research profile
My research interests focus on the emerging dynamics and structures of the digital public sphere, as well as on new transmedia narratives, both in relation to journalism and political communication. I have directed two projects at the regional level as Leading Researcher, and participated in seven other R+D projects as research collaborator that obtained official funding at the national level, and six at the regional level. Furthermore, I have been Leading Researcher in seven R+D+Transfer official research contracts with private companies and public administrations.
I have published three academic books, more than thirty papers in scientific journals, thirteen book chapters and I have delivered more than forty scientific conferences. I took part in six official Innovative Teaching research projects, one of them as a director and another as a co-director. In 2016 I was elected a member of the Board of Directors of the Latin Union of Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture (ULEPICC-Spain), and until that year I was Secretary of the Discourse Analysis section of the official Spanish Association of Communication Research (AEIC).
