The project “UNCOVERING AND CLASSIFYING THE ECOLOGICAL INTEGRITY OF REGENERATING FORESTS IN THE AMAZON”, approved by the Cnpq SINBIOSE announcement, is recruiting a researcher for a period of one year with the possibility of extension for another year. The project aims to carry out a scientific synthesis of the existing knowledge on ecological integrity indicators of secondary Amazonian forests, including field and remote sensing metrics. There will be no data collection. The synthesis will be based on a literature review, workshops with experts in both areas of knowledge, and on data analysis from different remote sensors and secondary forest monitoring plots. The project has a team of 20 experts in tropical ecology and remote sensing, from different institutions in Brazil, the United States and the Netherlands.
Requirements for applicants:
• excellent organizational skills
• ability to work independently
• experience with remote sensing and/or tropical forest ecology
• knowledge of statistical analysis in an R environment
• excellent reading and writing skills in Portuguese and English
• fluent English
• availability for 3 trips of 1 week during the 2 years of the project
• availability to start work immediately
Job assignments:

  1. Carry out a review of the literature described in the project
  2. Co-organize three workshops that will take place over the two-year period
  3. Coordinate the production of two secondary forest monitoring protocols for technicians in the area
  4. Write at least one scientific dissemination article
  5. Write at least one scientific article under the guidance of the responsible researchers
    Work conditions
    The available position refers to a junior (R$4.100,00) or senior (R$4.400,00; >7 yrs after PhD graduation) postdoctoral scholarship, according to the candidate’s experience and according to the Cnpq rules. The Cnpq postdoctoral scholarship will be implemented for one year with the possibility of extension for another year. The candidate must dedicate her/his time exclusively to the project, with the possibility to work remotely. It is expected that the postdoc will spend long periods (2 weeks to 2 months, depending on project demand) in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil where she/he will work on the premises of the Brazilian National Institute for Research in the Amazon – INPA, under the guidance of Dr. Rita Mesquita and Dr. Catarina Jakovac. There is a possibility for the fellow to do an internship in other partner institutions of the project. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with a network of leading national and international researchers and participate in a 2-week workshop to be held in 2021 at the University of Wageningen, The Netherlands.
