Al Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art.

Curated by Lara Khaldi y José A. Sánchez

Jerusalem and Ramallah. 24/10 – 2/11/2011

Conceived and directed by Jack Persekian and Al Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art, the Jerusalem Show is an annual art and cultural event in the old city of Jerusalem. This year’s programme, titled “on/off Language”, included a curated programme of performances, exhibitions, talks and workshops at a number of venues in the old city and Salah el din area, as well as events in Ramallah.

In 1996 Jack Persekian invited artist Mona Hatoum to create a site-specific installation in his Anadiel Gallery in Jerusalem. The result was Present tense (1996), a powerful and provocative work where the artist used bars of the famous Palestinian soap to recreate the devastating division of Palestinian Territory mapped out by the 1993 Oslo Accords. The ephemeral and perishable nature of the soap alludes most precisely to the unsustainability of the arrangements for control of the West Bank and Gaza, and over the years has forced Persekian to reflect on the failed promise of peace, the separation wall and the reality of a volatile, shifting and disintegrating country.

After 12 Years is a legal case brought before the United Nations and the Swiss legal systems by the Botanical Department of the Palestinian Museum of Natural History and Humankind on behalf of a family of five Olive Trees that arrived from Ramallah, Palestine to Ariana Park at the United Nations Office, Geneva, in 1995. The case argues the Trees legal right to be granted Swiss citizenships, since they have fulfilled the Swiss naturalization requirements for the past 12 years, or the Trees legal Right of Return. The case is supported by the Museum’s collection, comprehensive research, and documentation of these trees and their lives.

Maha Maamoun
2026
Based on a text from the Egyptian novel The Revolution of 2053: The Beginning, by Mahmoud Uthman (2007), and referencing a scene from Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962), a time-traveller recounts his vision of the future of the Pyramids area, and by extension Egypt, in the year 2026 – a vision that strains to reach beyond, yet remains severely confined by the present’s imaginal constraints. Actor: Ahmad Kamal. Production: Tamer Eissa, Doa Aly. Lighting: Kareem Seif
Editing: Louly Seif, Maha Maamoun.

Maha Maamoum – Night visitor Palestinian Art Court – Al Hoash. Historically, the term ‘Night Visitor’ referred to undercover police investigators who would attack houses and arrest political activists in the dark of the night. On this night the roles are reversed, at least for a few hours, and the hunted become the hunters. Using material that documents the recent Egyptian revolution, shot by the protagonists of events while storming the state security offices, and later posted on the Internet, the video Night Visitor, by Maha Maamoun, address different layers of sentiment accompanying this time of rupture and blurring of demarcation lines.

Tom Molloy Handshake. Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art. An act of shaking a person’s hand with one’s own, used as a greeting or to finalize an agreement.

Tom Molloy Word. Palestinian Art Court – Al Hoash. A single distinct conceptual unit of language, comprising inflected and variant forms; as a greeting or to finalize an agreement.
