Our yearly European Cinema Festival ‘The Multilingual Screen’ aims at showing some of the different ways European cinema-makers express feelings and emotions using this medium. Our focus is on the illustration of Europe as a multilingual and multicultural society, as well as on the impact of European multilingualism on the way emotions are felt, understood and conveyed.

Screenings will be held in the Salón de Actos, Facultad de Letras, UCLM (Ciudad Real). All screenings will be free.

Movie: It’s a Free World (2007), by Ken Loach.

Languages: English, Polish.

Storyline: Angie gets the sack from a recruitment agency for bad behaviour in public. Seizing the chance, she teams up with her flatmate, Rose, to run a similar business from their kitchen. With immigrants desperate to work the opportunities are considerable, particularly for two girls so in tune with these times (retrieved from IMDB).

Movie: Joyeux Noël (2005), by Christian Carion.

Languages: French, English, German, Latin.

Storyline: In 1914, World War I, the bloodiest war ever at that time in human history, was well under way. However on Christmas Eve, numerous sections of the Western Front called an informal, and unauthorized, truce where the various front-line soldiers of the conflict peacefully met each other in No Man’s Land to share a precious pause in the carnage with a fleeting brotherhood. This film dramatizes one such section as the French, Scottish and German sides partake in the unique event, even though they are aware that their superiors will not tolerate its occurrence (written by K. Chisholm, retrieved from IMDB).

Movie: Dom za vesanje (Time of the Gypsies, 1988), by Emir Kusturica.

Languages: Romani, Serbian, Croatian, Italian, English, German.

Storyline: In this luminous tale set in the former Yugoslavia, Perhan, an engaging young Romany with telekinetic powers, is seduced by the quick-cash world of petty crime that threatens to destroy him and those he loves. (written by D. M. Barclift, retrieved from IMDB).

Movie: Les poupées russes (Russian Dolls, 2005), by Cédric Klapisch.

Languages: French, Russian, English, Spanish, Italian.

Storyline: Xavier is now thirty. No longer a student, he is not yet a well-balanced, fulfilled adult either. His career is unsatisfying: Far from being the renowned novelist he aimed to be he must be content with little jobs such as reporter or ghost writer. His greatest «achievement» in «literature» is his collaboration to the script of a corny TV soap! His sentimental life is not much better, rhythmed by one night stands and unfinished romances. It looks as if when he seduces a woman beautiful outside and inside such as Kassia or Wendy he can’t keep them. Will he ever bring his life into focus? (written by G. Bellinger, retrieved from IMDB).
